NYSC CHRONICLES: My Camp Experience

by admin

Hi Fam! Its been a while… and it  feels really good to be back because I’ve missed my blog so much!

In my previous post, I stated that I’ll be going for my NYSC orientation (National youth service corps). Well! I went and I survived.

The first week of camp wasn’t really fun for me. I didn’t have any friends, I was literally the only person from my department in school that camped in Abuja, I had to get used to sleeping on a bed that could pass for a blanket, I had to wake up 2am everyday which is something I would NEVER do on a normal day Lol, i had to queue to get water, to take a shower and to get food too.

To top that up, the soldiers weren’t smiling during the first week, it was more like a military college thingy. We literally started rehearsing for the swearing in ceremony few hours after registration. We were drilled and punished alot, we were on the parade ground three consecutive times daily. According to them, we weren’t corpers until we were sworn in, which was actually accurate. We were just ‘otondos’ and ‘federal government white chickens’ ( that’s why I never posted a pic of me wearing my white shirt nd short Lol). I really couldn’t see myself adjusting, instead I was planning my escape or to apply for an exit or something Lol.

Fast forward to the second week, started making friends from my platoon, hostel, lectures, social activities. I Also auditoned and became a member of the orientation broadcasting service group (made more friends). Got used to waking up  very early, got used to my blanket-like bed, camp food, as well as the drills.

NYSC orientation camp exposes you to a lot of things, you met people from different parts of the country, different schools, languages. You meet really nice people and then you meet the really mean ones. People who will blow your minds with their ideas and their level of exposure and those whose ignorance will make you question how they graduated from school and actually made it to the service year. They basically drag for everything! They quarrel in the queue, on the parade ground, for food, for allowances, for chairs during social activities and lectures, some will even try to push you out of the chair that you struggled to get and in your mind you’re like “is this person kidding me right now?” Mehn……

There’s also nothing as sweet as meeting people who inspire you, their dedication and the effort they put into what they do just makes you want to do better. In other words, a very big shoutout to Miss Jacklyn. You inspire me Ma! she was always up early, sleeps late but the energy and charisma through out was just crazy!

I learnt how to adjust to not being in my comfort zone, prior to camp, I had been to a boarding school or in a hostel. Sharing a room, toilet, having to queue for things has never really been my style. So, the change was good! Annoying sometimes, but learning how to tolerate and adjust was a really good thing for me.

I miss camp lol, and I miss my friends. I made some really good friends, we still talk everyday and I believe we are going to be friends for a very long time. Though the service year is looking very stressful already, I’m looking forward to what it has in store for me. A great experience I hope!

See you later guys! Love you and thanks for reading!
